Upper Dolpo Base Camp Trek

24 days Camping Strenuous

Overview

The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote, challenging, and culturally significant Himalayan adventures, exploring the isolated mountain landscapes of Shey Phoksundo National Park near the Tibetan Plateau. Renowned for its dramatic high-altitude terrain, ancient spiritual traditions, and remarkably preserved Tibetan-influenced culture, Upper Dolpo offers an extraordinary trekking experience far from Nepal’s more crowded trails.

The journey includes some of Dolpo’s most iconic destinations, including Phoksundo Lake, the ancient Shey Gompa monastery, the traditional settlement of Saldang, and the remote Tarap Valley. Along the way, trekkers encounter vast arid landscapes, rugged mountain ridges, deep valleys, and traditional villages that reflect centuries of Himalayan history and cultural exchange.

A major highlight is crossing challenging high-altitude passes such as Kang La, Saldang La, and Jeng La, depending on the chosen itinerary. These demanding crossings reveal spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges and the stark, windswept landscapes characteristic of the trans-Himalayan region.

Upper Dolpo is particularly important for its Tibetan Buddhist and ancient Bon religious heritage. Remote monasteries, traditional chortens, mani walls, and centuries-old customs provide a rare insight into communities whose cultural traditions remain closely connected to the Tibetan Plateau. The region also supports remarkable wildlife, including snow leopards and blue sheep, within a fragile high-altitude ecosystem.

The trail enters Shey Phoksundo National Park and follows the Suli Gad river through gorges and forests of blue pine to Chhepka.

You continue through dense forest and across wooden bridges as the valley gradually rises toward the high country.

A climb past the Phoksundo waterfall leads to the striking turquoise Phoksundo Lake and the Tibetan-style village of Ringmo.

A day to acclimatise, explore the lakeshore and Ringmo village, and visit the Bon monastery while taking in the views of the surrounding peaks.

The trail traces the western shore of the lake along a spectacular rock ledge, then follows the Phoksundo Khola to a riverside camp.

You leave the valley floor and climb steadily through juniper and open slopes to the high camp below the Kang La, preparing for the first big pass crossing.
