North Annapurna base camp trek

5 days tea Strenuous

Overview

The North Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a remote and less-traveled trekking route in Nepal’s Annapurna region, approaching Annapurna I (8,091 m) from its northern side. Unlike the classic Annapurna Base Camp Trek, this route takes trekkers toward the dramatic north face of Annapurna through the Myagdi District, offering spectacular views of the Himalayan landscape and a more wilderness-oriented trekking experience. The trail is also connected with the historic Maurice Herzog expedition, which successfully climbed Annapurna I in 1950, making it the first 8,000-meter peak to be successfully climbed.

The trek lies within the broader Annapurna Conservation Area and passes through remote valleys, forests, traditional villages, waterfalls, alpine landscapes, and glacial terrain before reaching North Annapurna Base Camp. Trekkers can also experience attractions such as Panchakunda Lake, the Miristi Khola valley, and spectacular views of the Annapurna I north face. Because the route is less developed than the southern Annapurna Base Camp trail, it is particularly suitable for travelers seeking a quieter and more adventurous Nepal trekking experience.

After breakfast, your journey begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara through Kande, Nayapul, Kusma, Parbat, and Baglung. The road is relatively smooth up to Baglung, after which the route becomes mostly off-road. Continuing through Beni and Tatopani, you stop for lunch before driving deeper into the Kali Gandaki Valley. The final section passes through dramatic gorges, hydropower construction sites, tunnels, and bridges, with beautiful views of the Kali Gandaki River. After around 6–7 hours of driving, you reach Hum Khola, the final point accessible by road. The area has only a basic teahouse, so you will camp here for the night. Dinner is prepared at the campsite, surrounded by the rugged Himalayan landscape.

After breakfast, you begin the trek toward Busket Mela, gradually gaining altitude through a remote and rugged Himalayan landscape. After around two hours, you reach the impressive Futu Waterfall, where you can stop and enjoy the pristine surroundings. The trail then continues toward Sandikharka, a small shelter where you can rest and have some snacks. Further along, you reach Ghupaphant, another shelter offering views of Tilicho Peak between the surrounding cliffs. After another hour of trekking, you arrive at Busket Mela. There is no electricity or mobile network here, so power banks are essential. You camp near the river, using filtered or treated river water for drinking. Overnight stay in camping.

After breakfast, you continue deeper into the remote North Annapurna region. The trail follows rocky terrain surrounded by impressive rock formations, waterfalls, and small streams. As the altitude increases, you take regular breaks to rest and stay hydrated. Along the way, you pass Sun Khola, meaning “River of Gold,” named for the golden-colored stones found along the river. After approximately four hours of trekking, you reach the Campsite at around 4050m, located beside the beautiful Panchakunda Lake. North Annapurna Base Camp lies only about 30 minutes farther, but because there are no shelters suitable for camping there, this campsite serves as the final overnight camp. Overnight stay in camping.

then trek back to Hum Khola and drive to Tatopani, Trekking Duration: 6 hours, Driving Duration: 2 hours. After breakfast, you begin the final ascent toward North Annapurna Base Camp. The route passes through pristine and isolated landscapes where Himalayan blue sheep and other wildlife may be seen.
